An aluminium storefront door opens hundreds of times a day. Here is what wears out first, and why.
Volume is the whole story
A front door at a house might see a handful of trips in the morning, a few at night, and not much in between. A storefront door is a different machine entirely. Staff comes in, customers come in and out all day, deliveries hit the door, and people lean on it, push it, pull it, and let it swing wider and harder than it was ever meant to at a home. That cycle count is what changes everything. Hardware doesn't wear out because it exists. It wears out because it repeats the same movement over and over under load, and a business door repeats that movement far more than a residential lockset, hinge, or closer ever will.
That's why commercial-grade parts exist. They're built for a higher number of cycles, heavier door leaves, stronger springs, thicker pivots, better bearings, and hardware that can take abuse without going sloppy right away. On a busy aluminum storefront, the stress is constant. Every opening puts force through the same points: the pivot, the closer arm, the latch, the fasteners, the frame prep. If one part is undersized, the rest of the door pays for it. What looks fine on a side door at home often starts showing play, drag, looseness, or incomplete latching fast when it's asked to do storefront duty.

The hook bolt is the part that throws into the frame and actually secures many storefront doors; the mortise cylinder is the keyed cylinder that turns the lock body inside the stile. They wear because small internal parts are doing the same job constantly, and because a slightly out-of-line door makes the lock work harder every turn. Early signs are usually subtle: the key starts needing a wiggle, the thumbturn feels stiff, the bolt does not throw all the way without pulling the door, or the key comes out rough instead of smooth.
Thresholds wear because they take every footstep, cart wheel, bit of grit, and the bottom edge of the door when alignment starts drifting. On many storefronts around Elkton, you can spot a worn threshold by a polished groove, loose fasteners, or sharp edges where the metal has been chewed up. Once that surface is worn down or loosened, the door can scrape, catch, or bounce on closing. That is not just cosmetic wear. Alignment is usually the real fault

Latching speed is the last few inches of travel, where the latch has to enter the strike and seat properly. If latching speed is too weak, the door stops short, bounces, or sits there looking closed when it is not actually secured. That is not a nuisance at closing time. It means the storefront may be left unlocked, and someone can pull it open from outside without forcing anything.
Backcheck is the braking action when the door is opened hard. It slows the door before it reaches the end of its swing. When backcheck is set wrong, or not working at all, a gust or a strong push can send the door straight into the wall, the glass, or the stop. That is why a closer has more than one adjustment. Each function is doing a different job, and when one is off, the door tells on itself.
Panic hardware is a life-safety item
An exit device is not just another piece of door hardware. It's the bar people push when they need to get out, and that makes it a life-safety item first and a repair item second. These devices are part of what gets looked at during inspections, and they are not optional on doors that are meant to have them. If the bar doesn't move cleanly, if the latch doesn't release every time, or if the device has been tied back or propped so it stays unlatched, that door is no longer doing the job it was installed to do.
Sticking or binding usually means the device is being forced to work against another problem, but the symptom still matters on its own. If people have to shove hard, hit the bar twice, or lean into the door to get out, that is a warning sign. In a normal rush of traffic, staff may work around it without thinking much about it. In an emergency, nobody has the extra attention for a door that only works if you know its trick. Panic hardware has to release plainly and predictably, every time, for every person using it.
A propped device is its own problem too. Sometimes a business keeps the latch retracted because the door is hard to open, deliveries are constant, or the bar has started dragging. That may keep traffic moving for the moment, but it also leaves the opening unsecured and masks wear that keeps getting worse. It packs into corners, grinds at moving parts, and changes how the door rides over the threshold. Add road salt, damp air, and tracked-in slush, and the lower hardware stays wet longer than the rest of the opening. Winter sticking usually isn't because the door suddenly "went bad." More often, summer heat was masking a marginal condition. Seals get stiffer, metal moves, moisture hangs around the bottom, and the same door that worked through July starts catching in January. That seasonal change is a clue. It tells us to look at how the whole opening is reacting to weather, not just the spot where you feel it rubbing.
What a failure actually costs a business
Most businesses do not lose money because a part wore out. They lose money because the door stops doing its job while the business is trying to trade. If the door will not lock at closing, somebody has to stay there until it is secured. That means payroll, changed plans, and a manager dealing with a building problem instead of finishing the day. If the door will not open from the outside, customers hesitate, pull once, then leave. Deliveries back up. Staff start walking people in by hand. The repair is only one piece of the loss. What to check before you call
Before you call, do one simple test with the door open a crack: pull it fully into the frame by hand, then try the key. Next, stand back and look at the gaps around the door. Daylight at the top on one side, or a bigger gap at the bottom than the top, usually means the door is sitting out of square in the opening. On aluminum storefront doors, small changes in that gap matter. The lock has very little tolerance, so a door that has dropped, twisted, or shifted can make good hardware act bad. Then check whether the hook actually meets the keeper where it should. If the hook hits the face of the keeper, slides under it, or barely catches, that's a strong sign the door and frame are no longer meeting in the right place.
Last, watch the closer do its job without anyone pushing or pulling the door. It should bring the door all the way shut on its own and leave it fully seated in the frame. If it stops short, bounces, or needs a shove at the end, the door may never reach the position the lock needs.
